The backdrop to Wedding Cake (Une pièce montée) is a country-side wedding amongst the provincial middle-class. Each chapter focuses on one of the party’s protagonists, each story in turn finding its own place both in the family album, and in the chronology of this special day. From the bridesmaid who confronts injustice to the priest besieged by his own demons in front of a mystified assembly, to the colleague as incurable flirt and the eccentric aunt looking for love, to the naughty grand-mother and the hysterical bride… A colorful succession of characters mingle through a series of funny, cruel or moving scenes where people are unmasked and family secrets revealed. Wedding cake unravels like a fast pace comedy, as if, rather than mere spectators, we ourselves were amongst the guests, invited to share in the impertinent pleasure offered by this first novel.
Blandine Le Callet was born in 1969. Une pièce montée is her first novel.
