Justine Lévy’s third novel could have been called A Question of Timing. As Louise is about to give birth to her first child, her mother Alice dies. She could have chosen yet another title: Back to Front Daughter, Inside Out Mother. When Louise goes to announce the imminent birth of her daughter Angèle to her mother, who is holed up in a hospital room, the impossible Alice is completely determined she is wrong. A little girl can’t be pregnant. As far as Alice is concerned, Louise has never grown up. She is the result of a childhood romance which didn’t last long but from which even Louise’s father probably never recovered. If Louise grows up, then Alice will no longer be loved.
Not long after her mother’s death, Louise finds her notebook and realises that, apart from indelible memories, this jumbled sentimental diary is the only thing she has left. It is up to her to piece together this woman ’s fractured life just when she is picturing the future for her little Angèle.
As these pages unfold, the hundreds of thousands of readers who enjoyed Rien de grave will recognise some of the characters. A bad daughter… really? As usual, Justine Lévy does not cast herself in a good role. Still treading the shaky tightrope of tragi-comedy and with a welcome dose of impropriety, she creates her own style, her own world.

Mauvaise fille / A Bad Daughter is Justine Lévy’s third novel after Le Rendez-vous (Plon, 1995) and Rien de grave (Stock, 2004).
