How does one see the world and people when one works as a supermarket cashier? What does a cashier learn about us in relation to what we have bought, what we say, the questions we ask?
To pay at the cashier is in fact a very specific event. We believe, wrongly, that the experience is a neutral one and we do not pay attention. The person sitting behind the cashier desk is, for us, a blind presence, almost a machine. We therefore show ourselves the way we are. Yet when the cashier woman is called Anna Sam, holds a literature degree and likes to watch and analyze the world around her, then we have someone who records our small lies and cowardice as well as our strange habits. The result is a book that resembles no other.
