In this innovative essay, François Heisbourg shows how the current economic crisis shapes new relationships between international powers. The key aspects of this upheaval are: the accelerated rise to power of a China discovering the poisoned pleasures of arrogance, the strategic and economic relegation of an incoherent Europe and a doddery Japan, and the implications of the role played by and the political stance adopted by the United States.
Amongst other things, François Heisbourg draws attention to the particular significance of a crisis which owes its gravity and length to a collision between the short-lived but immeasurably costly recession of 2008-2009 and the long-term planetary challenges that will take care of us if we do not take care of them.

François Heisbourg chairs the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.
