“One day I realized I had never thanked it, although I have it to thank for the fact that I read. And what would I be, who would I be if I didn’t read or, more importantly, had never read? But for nearly sixty years now I’ve leant on it every morning as, step by step and eraser in hand, I’ve tried to move my stories forward. And what would my life be without telling stories?
I left it far too late. The time had come to pay tribute to it. Particularly as people said it’s fragile and threatened. So I set off along a road. Its road.
From China to the forests of Canada, via Finland, Sweden, Russia, India, Japan, Indonesia, Samarkand, Brazil, Italy, Portugal and of course France, I visited the oldest sites and memories relating to paper. But I also marveled at the latest technology, such as the technique for grafting on a virus to kill bacteria, or the electronic imprinting method which allows a record to be kept of all incidents on a parcel’s journey and any failure to meet necessary standards of hygiene and temperature.

Erik Orsenna is a member of the Académie française and won the Gouncourt prize for L’Exposition coloniale (Seuil, 1988). « Un jour, je me suis dit que je ne l’avais jamais remercié. Pourtant je lui devais mes lectures. Et que serais-je, qui serais-je sans lire et surtout sans avoir lu ? Pourtant, c’est sur son dos que chaque matin, depuis près de soixante années, je tente de faire avancer pas à pas et gomme aidant mes histoires. Et que serait ma vie sans raconter ? De la Chine à la forêt canadienne, en passant par la Finlande, la Suède, la Russie, l’Inde, le Japon, l’Indonésie, Samarcande, le Brésil, l’Italie, le Portugal et bien sûr la France, j’ai rendu visite aux souvenirs les plus anciens du papier. Mais je me suis aussi émerveillé devant les technologies les plus modernes, celles qui, par exemple, arrivent à greffer des virus capables de tuer les bactéries, celle qui, grâce à des impressions électroniques, permettent de renseigner sur le parcours d’un colis les chocs qu’il a reçus et si les conditions d’hygiène et de froid ont tout du long bien été respectées.
Cher papier ! Chère pâte magique de fibres végétales ! Chère antiquité en même temps que pointe de la modernité ! La planète et le papier vivent ensemble depuis si longtemps : plus de deux mille ans. Le papier est de la planète sans doute le miroir le plus fidèle et par suite le moins complaisant. » E. O.
