At forty, Madeleine lives alone in Brest. She works as an estate agent, has occasional flings with men that don’t stay; men she’d like to retain but who are satisfied with one night and disappear afterwards.
One morning, she receives a call from Paris at the agency. A man called Castellot is looking for houses in the region. He arrives the next day. This one is interested in her. At the beginning, she does not believe it. He is a married man with children, why would he come back to her bed in a freezing town of Brittany?
She is wrong. Castellot does come back and while she makes up her mind on whether or not he is the man of her life, he is thinking of changing his life, wife - his whole affective environment.
Both seem inconsolable but it is not the same grief that fills them. Of the two, the one who will come out best of this strange adventure is obviously not the one that one would have expected to.
Since her beginnings as a writer Amanda Sthers never stopped surprising us. She followed an autobiographical novel, Ma place sur la photo (Grasset, 2004), with a novel set in New-York’s Jewish district, Chicken street (Grasset, 2005), before moving to play writing with the remarkable and extremely successful Le Vieux Juif blonde (Grasset, 2006).
À quarante ans, Madeleine vit seule, à Brest. Elle travaille comme agent immobilier, connaît quelques aventures, des « amours de passage », comme l’on dit, des hommes qui ne s’attachent pas, qu’elle aimerait bien retenir mais qui se contentent d’une fois, d’une petite fois avec elle et qui disparaissent. Un matin, elle reçoit un appel de Paris à l’agence. Un certain Castellot cherche des maisons dans la région. Il arrivera dès le lendemain. Lui va s’attacher à elle. Au début, Madeleine n’y croit pas vraiment, se raisonne, se dit que cet homme marié et père de famille ne reviendra jamais ni dans son lit ni dans sa Bretagne glacée. Elle se trompe. Castellot revient et, tandis que Madeleine décide qu’il est l’homme de sa vie, lui songe à en changer, de vie, de femme, de climat affectif.
On dit souvent qu’un bon roman, c’est la rencontre d’un auteur et d’un personnage. Pour son premier roman chez Stock, Amanda Sthers nous en livre deux, un homme et une femme qui n’avaient rien pour s’aimer ni se comprendre, que l’amour réunit, un amour impossible : un type comme Castellot ne devrait pas s’enterrer à Brest, se coucher dans des draps toujours froids, jamais secs. Tous deux semblent inconsolables mais ce n’est pas le même chagrin qui les étreint ni la même maladie. Celui ou celle qui se sortira le mieux de cette drôle d’aventure n’est évidemment pas celui qu’on croit.
