“This book features the words of school students following the terror attacks at Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher; it explores their reactions and tries to understand who this young generation are.
The week of the 26th January I asked my classes of 12- to 14-year-olds to re-examine in writing the events of the 7th, 8th and 9th of January. I handed out blank sheets of paper, saying they needn’t put their names on them so they felt free to write. My aim: to glean spontaneous opinions and thoughts that weren’t channelled, encouraged or influenced by an adult’s. I felt that immediately after the event, I’d get a real cross-section, disparities in their reactions. Involvement versus nonchalance. Collective conscience versus individualism.”
Cypora Petitjean-Cerf was born in 1974. Her first book L’école de la dernière chance, un an en classe-relais was published in 2005, and she is the author of four novels, Le musée de la Sirène, Le corps de Liane, Le Film and La belle année, all published by Stock.
