China is the world’s second largest economy. There has been a huge increase in Chinese investment abroad. The assets of its five biggest banks exceed 100 billion Euros. As a strategist and a child of Communism, President Xi Jinping is locking all the doors to power. And the middle classes are becoming soft-bellied consumers. So is all well with China?
This essay is supported by up-to-date research and is the result of enquiries carried out since 2010 in various places, including Beijing. In it the author tells us there is a danger in China: “It wouldn’t be excessive to say that China’s fundamental political injustice has produced an inegalitarian system but this lack of equality has helped propel the country on the path to development.”
Growth, but at what price? A lack of political freedom, centralised power, the dangers of urbanisation, effects on the environment, urban smog, cancerous pollution devastating the countryside, inequalities in housing, minorities marginalised, and 230 million hapless, destitute people living without the vital internal passport. Can the Chinese model survive? Caught between the vice of an industrial crisis (because Bangladesh and Cambodia can now supply low cost goods more cheaply than China)and the stranglehold of arbitrary policies, China is edging into the fog. For how long and at what cost to western democracies?

La Chine est la deuxième économie mondiale. Les investissements à l’étranger d’entreprises chinoises ont explosé. Les bénéfices des cinq premières banques nationales dépassent les 100 milliards d’euros. Le président Xi Jinping verrouille, en stratège et héritier du système communiste, toutes les portes des pouvoirs. Et les classes moyennes consomment et s’amollissent. Tout va bien, alors, pour la Chine au grand concert des nations ?

Absence de liberté politique, concentration des pouvoirs, périls sur la contestation 2.0, dégradation de l’environnement, smog urbain, cancer des pollutions dévastant les campagnes, inégalités devant l’immobilier, marginalisation des minorités, et 230 millions d’humbles infortunés qui vivent clandestinement, sans le fameux passeport intérieur. Le modèle chinois aurait-il vécu ? Pris en étau entre la crise industrielle du low cost, car il y a désormais moins cher que la Chine au Bangladesh ou au Cambodge, et l’étouffement de l’arbitraire politique, la Chine entre dans le brouillard.
