Two brothers, Alexandre and Yann, love the same woman, Maria, met in the mid 1960s when they are all students. For more than forty years she is to be a pivotal force in their lives and an intimate spectator in this love story that takes place mostly in Paris, the political, literary and artistic heart of an evolving France.
Alexandre, the elder of the two, becomes a professor of literature, his younger brother Yann studies at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure and becomes a lawyer; while Maria is a biographer. The peace and hippie movement gives way to the glitter of the first neo-liberalism, and then successive economic crises that culminate in the recession at the beginning of the new millennium; Truffaut films Jules et Jim, Lacan indoctrinates whole intakes of young psychoanalysts, Althusser strangles his wife, Jankelevitch and Levinas spar with Derrida, Deleuze and even Lagarde and Michard.
It is Allis, a friend of Alexandre’s and a witness on the periphery, who tells the beautiful but appalling story of these forty years of love and betrayal.
Simonetta Greggio is Italian but writes in French. She is the author of four novels published by Stock: La douceur des hommes (2005), Col de l’ange (2007), Les mains nues (2009) and Dolce Vita 1959 – 1979 (2010). She has also written a novella (Étoiles, published by Flammarion) and a collection of short stories (L’Odeur du figuier, Flammarion).
Deux frères, Alexandre et Yann, aiment la même femme, Maria, rencontrée au milieu des années 1960 alors qu’ils sont tous les trois étudiants. Pendant plus de quarante ans, elle sera le pivot de leur vie et la spectatrice intime de cette histoire d’amour qui va se dérouler essentiellement à Paris, noyau politique, littéraire et artistique d’une France en mutation.
Alexandre, l’aîné, deviendra professeur de lettres, Yann, le cadet, après un passage à l’École Normale Supérieure, sera avocat, Maria écrira des biographies. Le mouvement pacifiste et hippie va laisser place aux paillettes du premier néolibéralisme puis aux différentes crises économiques qui aboutiront à la récession des années 2000, Truffaut tournera Jules et Jim, Lacan endoctrinera des cohortes de jeunes psychanalystes, Althusser étranglera sa femme, Jankélévitch et Levinas croiseront Derrida, Deleuze, et même Lagarde et Michard. C’est Allis, amie d’Alexandre et témoin extérieur, qui nous raconte l’histoire belle mais terrible de ces quarante années d’amour et de trahison.
