Major Alexander Laing was the first European to reach Timbuktu in August 1826. Starting from Tripoli where he left behind the young woman he had recently married, he traveled three thousand kilometers through the Sahara before he entered the mythical city. But the adventure turned into a nightmare. On the way back, Laing was assassinated. The discovery of this ‘pearl of the desert’ would be attributed two years later to a Frenchman, René Caillié.
Botanist Gabriel Barthomieux is forever recounting this tragic expedition. Young photographer Ariane follows him into the desert wondering what is so fascinating about Laing. Finally, Gabriel convinces her to write a novel about him. After all, the “Laing file” could not be more dramatic: unfulfilled love, horrific assassination, documents that mysteriously vanish, all unraveling in a Saharan setting, against a backdrop of diplomatic incidents. Ariane will soon understand that this story leads deep into the secret of amorous passion.

Le major Alexander Laing est le premier Européen à atteindre Tombouctou en août 1826. Parti de Tripoli en laissant la jeune femme qu’il vient d’épouser, il a parcouru trois mille kilomètres de Sahara avant d’entrer dans la cité mythique. Mais l’équipée tourne au cauchemar. Laing est assassiné sur la route du retour, et la découverte de la perle du désert sera attribuée, deux ans plus tard, au Français René Caillié.
Le botaniste Gabriel Barthomieux ne se lasse pas de raconter cette tragique expédition. Ariane, une jeune photographe qui l’accompagne au désert, se demande ce qui le fascine tant chez ce personnage. Elle finira par se laisser convaincre d’écrire le roman que souhaite Gabriel. Le « dossier Laing » est en effet des plus dramatiques : amours contrariées, horrible assassinat, suicides, documents disparus mystérieusement, incidents diplomatiques sur fond de décor saharien. Ariane comprendra que cette histoire mène au secret des passions amoureuses.
